Blessings and prayers

For the ones trying to hold it all: a blessing

We are each of us one thread in a rapidly growing tapestry.
We are each of us trying to hold together while chaos tugs and tears at the edges.

What it means to be ‘we’ is unravelling
Quickly, we try to stitch it anew
Horribly grateful not to be the ones at those tattered edges
As we hold fast to the ones we know,
We start to fear the ones we don’t.

As we seek to hold it all with love
May we resist, and may we surrender:

May we resist the voices that tell us simple but untruthful stories
May we surrender the need to be certain.

Resist the quick comebacks that we might use to defend ourselves
Surrender to our own culpability.

Resist the economy of attention
Surrender to embodied ways of being and knowing.

Resist irony-poisoned hopelessness
Surrender to the wisdom of our grief and our joy.

Resist the desire to retain the shattered frames that have given our world meaning so far
Surrender some autonomy in exchange for community.

Bless the ones who try to hold it all;
Can we ever do anything other than
Hold the ones with whom we are woven with radical love?

Can we ever do anything but try
To redefine who that includes?
