One of the reasons I trained as an interfaith mini

One of the reasons I trained as an interfaith minister was to offer people ways to connect with their own, innate spirituality.

To me, this means a person’s sense of who they are, what they are connected to, and what it means to live a life ‘fully alive’.

Something you might not know is that many interfaith ministers - myself included - don’t belong to a particular faith tradition at all. Exploring and cultivating spiritual practices has helped me cultivate my unique path of devotion.

For most of my adult life I’ve had a morning routine - some blend of meditation, yoga, journalling.

Honestly, the reason I keep it up is because if I don’t start my day with something soulful and gentle, I *very* quickly lose the plot.

Your spiritual practice doesn’t have to be in the morning. It doesn’t have to ‘look good’ or be worthy. It only has to connect you to yourself and bring you into the present moment.

A year ago today I was ordained as an Interfaith Minister with the OneSpirit Interfaith Foundation.

A few days before the public ordination ceremony, my cohort (not pictured but all very beloved!) and I made our personal, handwritten vows to one another under the boughs of a beautiful tree in the grounds of our retreat centre.

During that week or so last July, I grasped the sense that I was doing something that I was ‘meant’ to be doing with my time on this earth.

No wonder, then, that I felt rather deflated afterwards. The height of the high sometimes dictates the depth of the low needed to return to homeostasis. At the same time, I began having difficulty finding work and struggling with my mental health.

The year after the course is often called the informal ‘third year’ of the course, and I think I understand why now. In the absence of the intensity of the course proper, there was a profound deepening into the lessons that I learned over the two years. Little cracks in my heart and self were broken wide open.

It took a while to recognise that there was no ‘going back’ after the course ended. Accepting the call of the course was like diving into the ocean. The course itself may be a two-year wild ride in the slipstream, but the end of the course doesn’t deposit you back at the shoreline - it shoots you far out into open ocean.

This anniversary gives me a new opportunity to grieve the end of the course, which meant so much to me, but which maybe I wasn’t ready to mourn at the time. At the same time, it allows me to reconnect with that time in my life and celebrate all that was so beautiful about it.

For me, at least, it feels like the informal ‘third year’ is the true conclusion of my training - though not of my learning or growing.

I don’t want to talk about how long this reel took me to make 🥲

But as I approach the one year anniversary of my @bringittothealtar ordination it was really lovely to reflect on the biggest learnings from my intensive two year training. In short, it involved much less being taught specific ways of doing interfaith work and much, MUCH more sitting in circle and crying than I expected. And I truly wouldn’t have it any other way.

So stay tuned for updates on what I’ll be sharing over there as I try to figure out how to offer myself and my writing to the world.
